PROJECT 02: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

This research project adopts document analysis methodology that involves documenting, analyzing, producing, and a critical chronological and diagrammatical interpretation of Modern Malaysian architectural history. This project emphasizes critical analysis of the post Merdeka/Independence of Malaysian architecture in the effort to understand the influences of post-modernism to architectural design and construction, building science and technology, and urban design. The project is to distinguish the way in which many diverse factors contribute to the development of Modern Malaysian architecture.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. To allow students to undertake a research comparative analysis process on Modern Malaysian architecture practices throughout history through literature review and document analysis and present an appropriate chronological account of the Malaysian architecture based on the understanding gained through the analysis procedure.

  2. To familiarize students with the activities of culmination and production of a research analysis through assemblage, chronological indices and evaluation of information; composing and organization of study; assembly of illustration and text; design layout composition.

  3. To introduce visual and critical thinking through learning from precedents with diagramming, and to introduce the basic principles of form, space and order in the architectural design of Modern Malaysian architecture.

REFLECTION

My thoughts on this final assignment are that it was quite a challenging project to produce, especially in the pandemic. As the country is in lockdown, the inability to conduct site visits proved to make this project quite the challenge. This is because we had to do 100% of our research online, and with buildings that don't have much information available to us online, we had to spend a large amount of time sifting through the internet for a reliable source.

Other than that, I struggled with working with my team mates as not all of them were actively participating in the project. Fortunately, the few who were cooperative allowed us to complete the assignment in which I was satisfied with in the end, given the hiccups and miscommunication experienced.

Which is why I would like to take this moment to thank Adam and Thanuri, who had worked with me closely and were able to provide me with support as I led the team along. I am grateful to have such kind and hard working teammates who were willing to spend sleepless nights to work on this project with me.

Last but not least, I also have to thank Dr. Filzani for providing us constant support and feedbacks during tutorials.

All in all, this assignment was not just a test of resilience and patience, but it also allowed me to learn so much about the magnificent buildings in my hometown, which I am so proud of. The influence these buildings have on our country socially and culturally is important and significant, as they have shaped thousands and millions of peoples' lives from even before the world war era.

Architectural monuments cultivates pride of our past and heritage making us unique in the world.
