Project 2A: The Discovery Center (Genius Loci)

Project Introduction

Project 2A is a set of tasks where we are put into groups to conduct a site analysis of the given specific site and the “study area”. The aim is to extract the tangible and intangible elements of the site to develop guidelines on how to design the Discovery Center of Kampung Sungai Haji Dorani with the site conditions.

Visceral Boards

“Thanks To The Farmers”

We walk in the land of infinite paddy, the cradle of life for so many, the palm trees, sugarcanes, banana trees, and even lily pads, where storks, dragonflies, frogs, and crickets dance around. Guarded by the parit and the palong, the water fertile the lands. Little do we know, it is their passion and dedication who guide the waters, mother the land and blossom the spirit in Kampung Sungai Haji Dorani, as their sweat blends with the water that soaks the paddy.

Keywords: dedication, tenacity, heart and soul, blood sweat and tears.

“The Ones Who Stayed and The Ones Who Changed”

Life around the paddy transforms itself infinitely, but the paddy renews itself with no change. Kerbau turned into machines, generations turned from farmers to businessmen, and the jungle turned from green to concrete. The faded culture of doa selamat and baraan is nowhere to be seen, yet the farmers are still there, working for the unpredictable future. We enter with joy but leave with an unexpected sentimental attachment and worry for the fading culture around the fields.

Keywords: generation, worries of losing cultural essence, embracing yet contemplating about the change.

Site Analysis Documentation

Project 2B: Discovery Visitor Center

Project Introduction

Project 2B is a continuation from Project 2A and Project 1. Project 1 was aimed to introduce and explore the formal and poetic articulation of architecture in a site-less or hypothetical site condition. Project 2a was about the historical research and site analysis as a driver for architectural development for the Discovery Center. Finally, in Project 2b, the design brief calls for an architectural response to design A DISCOVERY CENTER (Visitor Center) emphasizing a strong engagement and relationship to the site, people, culture, history, spatial experiences, and programmatic requirements.

Project Outcome

Final thoughts

This semester was admittedly a more challenging semester for me to tackle, but with my tutor Ar. Eric's help and encouragement, I was able to complete Studio III learning a lot more about poetic storytelling of my designs. Through trial and error I was able to find my weaknesses and it will help me to further improve myself in the upcoming semesters. I would like to thank all of my lecturers, tutor, as well as my friends for being with me in this learning journey, as I've learnt countless of priceless knowledge from them.
