Narrative Media
Module Synopsis
This module aims to introduce students to the process of narrating visual storytelling with illustrative media, deriving on medium, message and historical connotations. The teaching and learning approach for the module is project based, with practical tasks given during the course of the module. The narration would be presented by the students via studio sessions and progressive media presentations. Online consultations through Zoom, Times and Spatial would also be done with consistent presentation progression and clarity in narrative media storytelling being a key assessment of the learning outcomes. Through workshops, studio assignments and live demonstrations, students will grasp the historical and societal nuances of narrative media storytelling and its relationship to interior architecture communication. As it is primarily an experimental module, a range of media, software and its various applications and techniques are explored to enable new methods of visual narratives. The module focuses on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) Goal 9 which nurtures innovative practices to improve on existing industrial technologies.
Workshop Projects
These mini projects were executed and completed during classes, which allowed my creative thinking skills to grow rapidly. I found these workshop very enjoyable, as it challenged many parts of our critical thinking skills such as observational skills and decision making, but also our ability to create and weave a story into our work.
01
Collage Workshop
For this workshop, we were tasked to create a set of three collage artworks using newspaper/magazine clippings. We were to creatively piece together three abstract collages on an A3 board that tells a story, with a catchy and suitable title.
Tools used:
A3 black mounting board, newspaper & magazine clippings, glue, masking tape
Equipment & Software used:
iPhone scanning app, Canva (to compile artwork)
Collage #1 "URBAN FRACTURE"

Collage #2 "FLOOD OF THE PADDY FIELDS"

Collage #3 "KEWPIE: NIGHTMARE FUEL ANGEL

02
Poetics of Everyday Life
This workshop tasked us to create a poster by utilising everyday items and objects along with a camera, to create a poster without any post-production editing. This was achieved by using environmental lighting and objects on hand.
Tools used:
Dried flowers, red cardstock paper, plastic film
Equipment & Software used:
iPhone camera, Canva (to compile + artwork)

03
Walking & Mapping Diary
For the final workshop, we were tasked to create a visual diary based on images we collected from observing our surroundings. We had half an hour to walk around campus grounds, taking pictures and collecting moments to create a narrative diary.
Equipment & Software used:
iPhone camera, Procreate, Canva

Project 1
For project 1, we delved into the basics of creating a 3D rendering by using 3DS Max. We were to create a scene that includes an object with grass and water in the landscape.
Collage #1 "URBAN FRACTURE"

Final Project
For the final project, we were tasked to present our skill of using SketchUp and Photoshop to create a narrative poster with a theme of our choice. For me, I picked a theme of a favored memory of a trip I had with my friends to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Integrating some abstract forms that I created on SketchUp, my artwork narrates a fragmented memory that features pictures from the trip; playing with the filters on Photoshop to create interesting visual tactility, as well as expressive sketches and drawings to emphasize the diverse nature of Sabah.
